Two Assistant U.S. Attorneys in Detroit who successfully prosecuted a group of Christian protesters who blocked access to abortion clinics were fired Monday, the Detroit News reports.

The Justice Department in Washington fired  Assistant U.S. Attorneys Frances Carlson and Sunita Doddamani as part of the Trump administration crackdown on what it alleges are politically motivated cases under President Joe Biden.

CBS News reports that there were at least four prosecutors fired in the U.S. for enforcing the FACE Act — Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances.

Robert Snell of The News reports:

The firings of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Frances Carlson and Sunita Doddamani came ahead of a Justice Department report Tuesday that named both prosecutors and outlined the alleged weaponization of a federal law that prohibits the use or threat of force to block access to abortion clinics.

The top federal prosecutor in Detroit, U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon, revealed the firings during a meeting with deputies Monday but the decision to terminate the prosecutors for alleged misconduct came from Justice Department officials in Washington, D.C., according to two sources familiar with the U.S. Attorney's Office who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss personnel matters.

The U.S. Attorney's Office declined to comment Tuesday to Deadline Detroit.
