Sen. Elissa Slotkin
Freshman Michigan U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin tells the Des Moines Register that she hasn't ruled out a run for president in 2028.
"I'm not so arrogant as to think it has to be me," Slotkin told the Iowa publication. "Midterms are what I'm focused on right now, but if it comes to the point afterward that I think there's not anyone else who's on the right path, I guess I wouldn't say no forever."
Slotkin, 49, was elected to the Senate in 2024 after serving two terms in the House. She beat Republican Mike Rogers, who is running again to fill the open Senate seat.
In a recent appearance on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, Slotkin was critical of the Democrats' messaging and sounded like a potential candidate.
"You're not going to get me to defend Democratic messaging, that's not going to be ever something that I'm going to defend," she said. "That's part of the problem and why we lost the last election and we can have a whole autopsy about that."
"What is important going forward, whether you're a Democrat or Republican, is like the American people, they're telling us...they want something different out of their government, they want...some alpha energy from their leaders and they certainly, whether you agree with them or not, are getting that from some of the Republicans. And my plea to my own party is like, can we have a little bit more alpha energy, punch, and believe in what we believe in and show people that we give a shit?"
"I'm here to be a part of that change."
