Jennifer Crumbley is pushing for a new trial and for the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office to be removed from her case.
Tresa Baldas of the Detroit Free Press reports that Crumbley's attorney is alleging that Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald has crossed multiple ethical and legal lines in the case in which his client was convicted of involuntary manslaughter involving her son Ethan Crumbley's mass shooting at Oxford High School in November 2021. She and her husband, James Crumbley, are both serving 10-15 years.
Baldas reports:
As part of this request, Crumbley's new lawyer disclosed new information Monday about the prosecutor's office: It paid nearly $36,000 to a public relations firm for one week of work after the Nov. 30, 2021 Oxford High School shooting — including setting up 40 one-on-one interviews with national media outlets — and is still paying a second PR firm $1,440 a month to monitor the media, according to invoices listed in a Monday court filing.
Appellate attorney Michael Dezsi alleges these PR firms, including social media influencers, were used to run a "smear campaign" against Jennifer and James Crumbley, the first parents in America to be held responsible for a mass school shooting committed by their son.
