A 42-year-old Detroit man has been charged with shooting a good Samaritan in the eye with a flare gun at a bus stop on Cass Avenue in the Wayne State area. The victim, who was trying to protect a woman from the suspect, suffered a non-fatal wound.
Daryl Tasmin Smith faces charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, and one count of felonious assault.
The incident happened in the afternoon of Feb. 20.
According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, Smith was allegedly harassing an elderly woman passenger while on a Detroit bus. The victim, 33, came to the woman's aid to protect her.
When the victim and Smith exited the bus at a bus stop at Cass and Warren, Smith allegedly pulled a flare gun out of his hoodie pocket and shot it, striking the victim in the eye. He then fled.
Wayne State University Police responded shortly after 4 p.m. and found the victim lying in the street, bleeding from his right eye. Medics transported him to the hospital for treatment.
Smith was arraigned Saturday in Detroit's 36th District Court and given a $100,000 cash/surety bond with a GPS tether and house arrest. A probable cause conference is set for March 3.
