Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, who failed in his bid to become governor last year, is running as a Republican for U.S. Senate, the Associated Press reports, citing two unnamed sources.
Craig will have some competition in the primary from former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, and possibly former Congressman Peter Meijer of the Meijer department store family, who is considering a run.
Craig has made it clear he supports Donald Trump for president. He recently posted on X, formerly Twitter: "Leadership matters and President @realDonaldTrump is the best candidate to defeat Joe Biden and get America back on track." He also wrote a column in the Daily Caller lauding Trump's qualities.
If 2022 is any indication, Trump was able to block candidates in the Michigan primary who did not support him. Those candidates lost in the general election.
Craig is also parroting Trump's anti-electric vehicle sentiment.
President Trump in Michigan: .”The Auto Industry is being assassinated” @realDonaldTrump is right. The Biden Administration’s obsession with Electric Vehicles will KILL manufacturing jobs in Michigan.
